Flexible Design and Global Experience

Italian Studies enriches students with linguistic and cultural skills to think critically about over 2000 years of Italian cultural production. It prepares them for professional careers in business, government, education, humanities, and science. It supports double majors and fulfills requirements in faculty-led study abroad programs in Italy.

Curriculum and Courses

Students begin the major with introductory Italian language (ITL 101) and our introduction to the rich history and cultural production of Italy in “Italy: Matrix of Civilization" (ITL 221). Students fulfill the remaining 27 credit hours for the major by selection from a list of interdisciplinary courses focused on Italy in Art History, Classical Studies, Film Studies, History, and Music. Our cross-disciplinary major encourages students to acquire deep knowledge about Italian culture and history through diverse perspectives that complement their personal and intellectual interests.

Career Options

Miami’s Italian Studies majors acquire a deep intercultural knowledge and rigorous training in independent research, critical thinking, and effective communication that are highly valued in today’s rapidly changing society. Many of our majors enter the workplace after graduation with successful careers in communication, international non-profits, music, management, marketing, international business, and education. Other graduates pursue advanced study in professional fields (law, business) with recent placements at the University of Pennsylvania and Ohio State University.

Additional Opportunities

  • Study abroad

    We offer faculty-led study abroad opportunities both in the summer and winter terms that allow students to fulfill requirements for the major and for Miami Plan requirements. Whether it is our Language and Early Childhood Education program in Reggio Emilia or the Made in Italy program in Bologna and Urbino or the Vision and Contrasts program in Florence, students immerse themselves in the richness of Italian culture, history, and life.
