Reading Instruction for Young Learners
Our program will prepare you to support the teaching of reading to young learners through 12th grade. The program draws from the latest research and field expertise for working with emergent and striving readers. You will gain insights into sociopolitical, cultural, and linguistic factors that affect literacy and research practices that inform assessment and instructional design.

Certificate holders may be employed in a variety of educational settings. Our program provides coursework necessary for a teacher to instruct reading in grades K-12 in the state of Ohio.
Curriculum and Courses
This 5-course, 16-credit hour endorsement certificate enables a teacher to teach reading in grades K-12 in the State of Ohio. Upon passing the tests you will also need to complete the application to add the Reading endorsement as a second teaching field. The application is at www.oh.nesinc.com.
- EDT 603: Language, Literacy and Culture
- EDT 632: Literacy Assessment and Instruction
- EDT 635: Clinical Literacy Practicum
- EDT 642: Phonics and Reading Improvement for the Reading Teacher
- EDT 646: Reading and Writing in Content Areas
Our endorsement certificate program is available to current and prospective graduate degree program students. Prospective students who are not seeking a Miami degree may also apply. Current students apply via our Graduate Certificate Form. All other applicants apply for admission to the program via the Endorsement Certificate application.
Applicants will submit a statement of purpose and copies of all college transcripts along with the $20 application fee.
