Our Art, Studio, MFA, is a sixty-credit-hour, terminal degree program that aims to prepare you for a professional career in the visual arts.
The variety of conceptual and stylistic approaches reflects a diverse and rigorous program.
Concentrations
Concentrations include:
- Three-dimensional studios in Ceramics, Metals, and Sculpture
- Two-dimensional studios in Painting, Photography, and Printmaking
We encourage each MFA candidate to build a distinctive and relevant studio practice driven by their individual aesthetic sensibility.
Studio Art Curriculum and Courses
Our program emphasizes disciplined studio work in conjunction with an intense and rigorous critical dialogue. Miami’s strong liberal arts tradition enables each MFA candidate to locate resources critical for their development. Graduate students can pursue courses outside the department in relevant areas, as well as utilize technologies in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the University Instrumentation Laboratory.
Concentration-Specific Studios
This program requires a minimum of two years of full-time graduate study, with studio concentration areas available in ceramics, metals, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

ART 660 Graduate Study in Ceramics
Intensive studio problems in ceramics, stressing professional orientation and personal interpretation.

ART 664 Graduate Study in Metals
Provides qualified graduate students with intensive study in metals craftsmanship as an art form.

ART 630 Graduate Study in Painting
Application of advanced techniques and pictorial concepts to problems in painting directed toward individual professional performance.
Appropriate research and related studio work.

ART 657 Graduate Study in Photography
Application of advanced techniques and pictorial concepts to problems in photography directed toward individual professional performance.
Appropriate research and related studio work.Intensive studio problems in ceramics, stressing professional orientation and personal interpretation.

ART 645 Graduate Study in Printmaking
Provides qualified graduate students with intensive study in metals craftsmanship as an art form.
Research and related laboratory work in fine print media. Advanced printmaking study in intaglio, relief, and planographic media.

ART 670 Graduate Study in Sculpture
Intensive studio problems in sculpting, emphasizing professional orientation and personal interpretation in sculpture.
Studio Art Assistantships
Most of our MFA students receive assistantships in the form of teaching or administrative duties, such as assisting in the gallery. Teaching assignments include the opportunity to teach as an Instructor of Record within their area of expertise, as well as in Foundation (2D or 3D) or Drawing. In addition to teaching, MFA students have unique opportunities and can compete for university grants.
- Our Graduate Assistantships include a waiver of the instructional fee and out-of-state tuition surcharge, an annual stipend, and reduced fees. Assistantships are available on a competitive basis.
- International students are also eligible for assistantships.

As a result of this academic exposure, our graduates can compile solid teaching experience, student work portfolios, and other relevant accomplishments that position them competitively as they begin their professional careers. Many of our graduates are employed by universities and colleges across the nation.
Valuing space in which to create, all MFA candidates have semi-private or private studios available 24/7 within the buildings comprising the Department of Art.

Studio Art, MFA Admission and Funding
Admission to the MFA Program in Studio Art is in two parts: online application to the graduate school, including supplemental information, and a portfolio submission to the Department of Art.

Priority application deadline is Feb.1, but the department may consider applications submitted after this deadline.
