Take the Lead in Health Science with Miami’s Biomedical Science Program
The Master of Medical Science in Biomedical Science (M.M.Sc.) at Miami University is designed to build on your passion for the health sciences and enhance your preparation for medical school, or for administrative or management positions in health care such as as dentistry, optometry, and physician assistant/associate.
The 12-month General Curriculum leads to the M.M.Sc. degree.
Curriculum and Instructional Design
Students from both the General Studies and Leadership tracks will take a core pre-clinical science curriculum based on courses from the Physician Associate Studies MS program (PAS). To individualize each student’s Plan of Study, electives are selected from graduate courses in General Science, Molecular Science, Neuroscience, and Public Health/Gerontology (BIO, CHM, GTY, KNH, MBI). For students who follow the Leadership track, additional courses from the Farmer School of Business are selected (FIN, ISA, MGT, MKT). The culminating experience for the M.M.Sc. degree is a Capstone that encourages individual and group reflection through journal entries, discussion groups, and individualized conferences. Students complete the Capstone with a strong sense of their potential for unique contributions to the future of healthcare.

Choose Your Track of Study

At the program’s start, you choose from a general focus track or a leadership focus track. The general track (32 credits) caters to students looking for a traditional educational path to medical school, while the leadership track (47 credits) is ideal for students with an interest in administration or management positions in health care or those who may need additional support in strengthening their science background or application credentials. Using evidence-based curriculum and clinical shadowing experiences, each aspect of the program enhances your understanding of both biomedical science and pre-clinical science, supporting you through personalized mentoring each step of the way.
General Focus Track
The general focus track serves as a traditional pathway to medical school or for immediate employment in the health care sector.
To complete this track, students enroll in 32 credits across a 12-month period.
General Focus (Pre-PA Students) Track
Students seeking to become physician associates typically favor the general focus (Pre-PA Students) track.
This track is similar to the general focus track; however, students in this track who are subsequently admitted to the Miami University Physician Associate program may be able to apply some credits toward both the M.M.Sc. in Biomedical Science and M.M.Sc. in Physician Associate Studies degrees.
Leadership Focus Track
The 47-credit leadership focus track is designed for students seeking extensive preparation beyond the general focus track.*
By collaborating with Miami University’s Farmer School of Business, each part of the track prepares them to lead clinical practices or health care-affiliated enterprises.
* Calculate your Science GPA based on CHM, BIO, MBI, MTH, PHY, STA courses. If your science GPA is < 3.3, you are a good candidate for our Leadership Program.

-
The hands-on Master of Medical Science (M.M.Sc.) in Biomedical Science program is designed to enhance your credentials for entry into medical school or related healthcare programs and increase your marketability for a health career.
To ensure you emerge as a well-rounded healthcare professional, you will leverage the skills acquired from the curriculum and shadowing experiences to meet the following learning outcomes:
- Deepen your knowledge of the basic sciences and biomedical sciences.
- Apply the skills learned from the M.M.Sc. program toward the capstone experience.
- Demonstrate respectful behavior needed to succeed in a clinical setting to both clinicians and patients throughout all shadowing experiences.
- Relay a broad and diverse set of competencies required to enter medical school, related graduate programs, or employment in the healthcare industry.
Master’s in Biomedical Science Program Curriculum
The M.M.Sc. program is a minimum 32-credit program, with curriculum divided into the following tracks: the General Focus Track, the Pre-Physician Associate General Track (Pre-PA), and the Leadership Focus Track.
While all tracks follow the same curriculum, the leadership focus track requires an additional 15 credits and requires 24 months to complete. Successful completion of the leadership focus track awards students a Master of Medical Science in Biomedical Science.
All tracks share the following curriculum:
- Pre-clinical science core curriculum based on courses from the Physician Associate Studies program.
- A minimum of 100 hours of graduate-level shadowing in diverse health care settings
- Electives selected from graduate courses in General Science, Molecular Science, Neuroscience, and Public Health/Gerontology (BIO, CHM, GTY, KNH, MBI).
- A capstone experience that encourages individual and group reflection on their clinical shadowing experiences through journal entries, discussion groups, and individualized conferences.
Hands-On Experiences
Shadowing Experience
All biomedical science students engage in diverse shadowing experiences where they observe clinical practices to reinforce coursework and grasp professional industry standards. Students have the autonomy to choose their shadowing placements, allowing them to explore diverse career options — from experiences such as technical support to involvement in volunteer organizations. These experiential activities play a pivotal role in establishing a foundation for the capstone experience.
Capstone/Culminating Experience
After finishing the clinical shadowing experience required for all three tracks, students complete a capstone experience which provides a framework to reflect on their professional growth during the biomedical science master’s program.
This involves presenting a comprehensive view of the health care sector, considering historical, economic, or sociological perspectives, and identifying specific challenges and opportunities for growth. Each student focuses on their distinctive potential, offering contributions derived from their own academic, clinical, and field experiences. The capstone concludes with the submission of a written report and a public presentation to the student’s peers and faculty.
