The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is an innovative degree program designed for working K-12 teachers. With a focus on classroom research and reflection, you’ll work alongside other teachers to share practical, impactful strategies that can be directly applied to your classroom and students. Created for teachers by teachers, the program’s online, in-person, and hybrid courses are designed to accommodate your busy schedule and are meaningful for teachers looking to find their professional home.
Curriculum and Courses
The program is a 32-credit-hour degree tailored to give teachers maximum flexibility and choice in their coursework.
Combining elective courses, classroom research, and the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute allows you to shape your studies to topics that are most relevant and meaningful to your own teaching needs. You’ll gain foundational knowledge for teaching, writing, and literacy and conduct research in your own classroom.

For MAT students, joining this expansive network of experienced educators leads to invaluable support and opportunities for professional growth throughout one’s teaching career. Highly engaged OWP alumni actively address existing issues in education, engage in school leadership, and publish their own writing. OWP teachers can also partner in national research grants, youth writing camps, collaborations with National Parks, and literacy conferences.

Students with OWP credits that are more than five years old may petition the Graduate School to apply their credit to the MAT.

OWP may offer one-, two-, and three-credit-hour workshops during the school year, but the majority of electives are offered during the summer semester.

Teaching of Writing Summer Institute
The Teaching of Writing Summer Institute serves as a cornerstone of the program, providing an immersive experience. Learn research-based strategies to enhance your teaching instruction, examine classroom practices, and participate in a writing community to build your own skills as a writer.

Graduate Credit Workshops
In addition to our master’s program, the Ohio Writing Project offers workshops that provide graduate credit on a variety of topics. These courses focus on the best in contemporary theory and practice, involve active participation, and support teachers as they build skills across all areas of literacy.

Application Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Valid K-12 Teaching License
- Teaching certificate
- At least one year of teaching experience
- GRE not required if you are a certified teacher
Application Process

- Apply to the Miami University Graduate School (select English and Master of Arts in Teaching).
- Submit the OWP/MAT application and your professional résumé.
- Ask your principal, department chair, curriculum director, or other school official to submit the OWP/MAT recommendation document.

Cost, Aid, and Scholarships
The Master of Arts in Teaching – English program offers an affordable and accessible pathway for current educators through the OWP Tuition Guarantee, which discounts each credit hour, regardless of a student’s residency status. This reduced tuition structure makes the program attainable for teachers across the country.
Additionally, the program provides scholarship opportunities for the six-credit-hour Teaching of Writing Summer Workshop. This scholarship support helps offset the overall cost of the degree and ensures that passionate and deserving educators can fully participate in this transformative learning experience.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive and limited basis for the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute.
To apply for a scholarship, send a one-page application to Monica Fisher, fishermv@MiamiOH.edu. The deadline is April 30, 2024.
