Direct Your Future in Film
The Film Studies co-major explores the relationship between film, culture, and society through the study of cinema history, film theory, and critical film analysis. Students examine how films reflect and influence cultural, political, and social ideas while analyzing movies from a wide range of genres, historical periods, and global cinema traditions. Through coursework in film criticism, visual storytelling, and cinematic techniques, you’ll become fluent in the language of cinema and learn how filmmakers use narrative, editing, sound, and cinematography to create meaning.
Students interested in filmmaking and film production can also gain hands-on experience creating their own work. The program offers opportunities to direct, shoot, and edit short films, helping you develop practical skills in digital filmmaking, storytelling, and film production techniques while deepening your understanding of how films are made.

Student media organizations, like WMSR (student run radio station) and M.A.F.I.A (The Miami Association of Filmmakers and Independent Actors) is a student group that helps creative people at Miami get experience in film and Television production.
Inside Hollywood – Study Away Program
This highly popular Miami workshop in Los Angeles gives students who are passionate about media an intimate look at Hollywood careers.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Program
Highly selective, year-long undergraduate assistant programs give students unique opportunities to work on leadership teams with a professor and other highly motivated and skilled students. UAs develop real-world communication and professional skills as they serve as peer mentors and conversation leaders.
What Can I do with a Film Studies Co-Major?
Students who co-major in Film Studies develop strong critical thinking, visual analysis, writing, and communication skills, along with valuable abilities in creative research, problem-solving, and teamwork. Many also gain hands-on experience in film production, directing, shooting, and editing their own films.
