Finance addresses the ways individuals, businesses, and organizations raise, allocate, and use monetary resources while taking into account risks. This major teaches the principles of finance, explains how financial techniques can solve some of society’s most important problems, and prepares students for financial asset management.
Curriculum and Courses
The required curriculum in finance provides you with a basic foundation in financial management and exposure to the nature and operations of the financial markets. Building upon this foundation, you may expand your knowledge by taking elective courses in banking, insurance, international finance, portfolio management, and real estate. With the help of an academic advisor, you can specialize in various areas such as financial planning, law, insurance, banking, and real estate.

The Department of Finance has many opportunities for hands-on learning. These include case competitions, financial immersion programs, and classes with considerable experiential learning activities.
Investment Banking Competition
The Department of Finance offers the Investment Banking Case Competition, sponsored by William Blair and Company. This competition showcases teams of students who have an interest in investment banking, private equity, commercial banking, corporate finance, venture capital and consulting careers. It is an excellent opportunity to develop and highlight students’ business and presentation skills.
Chicago Finance Week
A select group of finance students travels to the windy city each August for Chicago Finance Week. Students are exposed to the best ideas in the Chicago financial environment during presentations and discussions. Executives and Miami alumni from leading firms like Bank of America, Allstate, William Blair, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse interact on a personal level with students.
Study Abroad – Asian Financial Markets
This workshop is designed to expose students to global financial markets by visiting three of the most dynamic financial centers in Asia. Students will meet with and learn first-hand from business leaders at firms like Brickworks Capital, Tofugear, Northern Trust, CITI, Tesla China, Faegre Baker Daniels, EY and PwC to name a few.
