Become an Earth Expert
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Geology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio prepares students to study the Earth’s composition, structure, origin, and evolution through hands-on fieldwork and laboratory research. Located in southwest Ohio, the program offers direct access to diverse regional geology, including sedimentary rock formations, glacial deposits, and groundwater systems across Ohio and the Midwest. Students gain practical experience in field mapping, mineral and rock identification, environmental geology, hydrogeology, and geologic data analysis.
Miami University’s geology degree emphasizes real-world applications, preparing graduates to address challenges such as water quality in Ohio, natural resource management, environmental protection, climate resilience, and geologic hazards. Through undergraduate research, internships, and regional field experiences, students build the scientific and technical skills needed for careers in environmental consulting, sustainability, energy, and public policy—or for graduate study in the geosciences.
Curriculum and Courses
The courses you choose will open up a wealth of career opportunities — not lock you into one occupation. You’ll extend your education way beyond the classroom to every area of your life.

Summer Field Camp Course
The Miami University Summer field geology course is an intensive 3-week, 3 credit-hour course. Below are several of the outcomes of the field camp experience:
- Field description and measurement of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks
- Tectonic evolution of the western Cordillera
- Interpretation of regional and outcrop scale structures
- Traditional geologic mapping updated with remote sensing, GPS, and GIS techniques
- Visits to a diverse array of geologic settings in the American West

Careers in Geology and Environmental Earth Science
Upon graduation, about half of our undergraduates obtain immediate employment in earth science disciplines. Another 30 percent further their education in graduate programs. Because geoscientists are specially trained to observe and understand the world around them, they acquire and hone skills that are highly valued in many disciplines.
Employers of geoscientists include:
- Environmental Consulting and Planning Firms
- Energy and Mineral Resource Companies
- Materials Analysis Firms
- Governmental Agencies such as:
- the Department of Energy
- the National Park Service
- the Environmental Protection Agency
- Various Health Departments
- Schools and Universities
