The Integrated English Language Arts Education (Grades 7-12), B.S., program prepares you to transform traditional context for today’s classroom. You’ll observe and interact with urban and suburban/rural students while developing a foundation in psychology and human development.
Language Arts Education Curriculum and Courses
If your dream has always been to teach middle school or high school English Language Arts we can help to make that dream come true! Miami University’s Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry department trains individuals who have a developing passion for the skill and art of teaching, a commitment to educational equity, and a heart for students. Our students enjoy the benefits of a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy, along with courses on how to teach English and Language Arts intertwined with experiences in 7-12 classrooms. We also provide courses that teach you how to teach students with special needs.
Because you will also be taking a number of English courses, it is common for students to add a double major with English. A few of the courses you will take in this major include:
- EDP 201 Human Development and Learning in Social and Educational Contexts
- TCE 246A Foundations of Language and Critical Literacy
- EDP 301A Assessment and Evaluation in Educational Settings
- TCE 346A Reading Instruction for Adolescents
- TCE 423 Literature and Other Media for Adolescents
Accreditation
Miami’s Department of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. While Miami participates in licensure of teachers through an interstate agreement, if you are planning to teach in another state, you should contact that state’s certification office so you can apply for certification or licensure in that state.
