Flexible Design and Global Experience
Italian Studies enriches students with linguistic and cultural skills to think critically about over 2000 years of Italian cultural production. It prepares them for professional careers in business, government, education, humanities, and science. It supports double majors and fulfills requirements in faculty-led study abroad programs in Italy.
Curriculum and Courses
Students begin the major with introductory Italian language (ITL 101) and our introduction to the rich history and cultural production of Italy in “Italy: Matrix of Civilization” (ITL 221). Students fulfill the remaining 27 credit hours for the major by selection from a list of interdisciplinary courses focused on Italy in Art History, Classical Studies, Film Studies, History, and Music. Our cross-disciplinary major encourages students to acquire deep knowledge about Italian culture and history through diverse perspectives that complement their personal and intellectual interests.
- ITL 222 Italian American Culture
- ITL 231 Italian Food Cultures in Context
- ITL 262 Italian Cinema
- ITL 362 Mafia and Cinema
- ITL 364 From Marco Polo to Machiavelli
