Prepare for Health-Related Professional Programs
The Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health, M.S., program will develop the skills, maturity, and competency necessary for success in a variety of health-related professions.
Multidisciplinary, evidence-based coursework and hands-on research emphasize focus on exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, health promotion, and nutrition for health and performance.
Students are offered the following tracks:
- Exercise and Health Science Concentration
- Public Health Education and Health Promotion
- Combined M.S. and Dietetic Internship
The Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health (KNH) offers two combined bachelors-masters programs that allow highly qualified students to simultaneously pursue both a bachelor’s and master’s degree:
- Combined Program in Public Health Education and Health Promotion
- Combined Program in Exercise and Health Science

Curriculum and Courses
Students in both tracks (Exercise and Health Science and Public Health Education and Health Promotion), including the Combined Master’s and Dietetic Internship Program, will take a statistics and a research foundations course. Then, depending on the track chosen, students will complete a series of track-specific courses that they and their advisor choose based on their desired career pursuit. The program requires 30 credit hours. Students have the option of choosing a thesis or non-thesis track.

The Exercise and Health Science area of study is designed to provide breadth and depth of knowledge in the physiological and psychological functioning of human beings under a variety of environmental, nutritional, and activity conditions.
Curriculum
Coursework emphasizes the health benefits and consequences of regular physical activity on physiological, cellular, and motor integrity. Assessments of cardiovascular and respiratory fitness using graded exercise stress tests are routinely performed. Metabolic, blood lipid and blood pressure measures, electrocardiography, electromyography, video motion measurement, and ground reaction force measurements are other commonly used assessments.

The Public Health Education and Health Promotion area of concentration is designed to provide breadth and depth of knowledge in the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of health across the human lifespan.
Curriculum
The curriculum emphasizes cultural and personal determinants of health and wellness from an ecological perspective. Coursework prepares students as program planners and coordinators of health promotion programs in community, worksite, clinical, and educational settings.
Bachelor’s and Master’s Combined Programs
Our combined programs allow highly qualified undergraduate students to begin working toward the master’s degree as juniors or seniors in one of the related programs that offer 3 + 2 or 4 + 1 plans.
Combined program students remain undergraduates and pay their undergraduate tuition rate until they apply for graduation or submit a request to the Graduate School to have their classification changed from undergraduate to graduate. Accredited Combined M.S. and Dietetic Internship
The Miami University MS/DI is a 16-month, Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) -accredited program. Dietetic interns earn graduate credit when completing 1000 hours of supervised practice in and around the Oxford community. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians.
This program provides evidence-based learning experiences in dietetics to prepare graduates for practice as entry-level dietitian nutritionists in a variety of healthcare and community environments and focuses on educating graduates to be capable practitioners dedicated to the service of others and to the profession.

Research Opportunity
Students enrolled in our graduate program are required to complete a thesis or research-based non-thesis exit option. In both cases, students will work closely with our graduate faculty who conduct research in a variety of health-related areas.
Internship/Field Placement
For the MS/Dietetics internship, the combined program is a 16-month program requiring students to complete all required coursework for the Master of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health, Exercise Science and Health concentration, in conjunction with a 1,280-hour supervised practice experience.
Admissions Requirements
- Documentation (official or unofficial transcript) of completion (or likely completion) of a bachelor’s degree by the start date indicated on the student’s application.
- Minimum GPA: 2.75
- Supplementary materials including a personal statement, a resume/CV, and three letters of recommendation (at least two from academic sources).
