Decode Language, Unlock Careers
Our Bachelor’s in Linguistics, B.A., program offers students a comprehensive exploration of language—from its historical roots to its role in today’s diverse communication contexts. As a top linguistics major in Ohio, the program equips students with strong analytical and problem-solving skills essential for understanding how language functions across cultures and technologies.
Graduates pursue careers in fields such as computational linguistics, TESOL, law, security informatics, and more—areas where a deep understanding of language is vital. Many students continue their studies in graduate programs in Linguistics or related disciplines, including French, Germanic Languages, Sociology, Library Science, and beyond.

Curriculum and Courses
Our Linguistics Program offers a major and a minor to all Miami students. The interdisciplinary program is housed in the English Department in cooperation with a number of departments that contribute to the program through their course offerings.

Linguistics is a flexible program that encourages students to pursue their particular interests across a wide range of disciplines. Faculty members from throughout the Department of English and from a variety of departments across Miami teach courses for the program.
I like the amount of choice that I have. I’ve taken linguistics classes that are cross-listed with various other fields, and I think that provides a really great perspective. We’re essentially told to pick what specialty we want to go into, and then the major works with you to do that.
