The Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics (B.A.) at Miami University offers students a comprehensive study of language and linguistics, from the history of language to how it shapes communication in today’s global and digital world. Recognized as a leading linguistics major in Ohio, the program helps students build strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while learning how language works across cultures, communities, and technologies.
Students who earn a B.A. in Linguistics are well prepared for careers where understanding language matters, including computational linguistics, TESOL, law, security informatics, education, and technology. Many graduates also pursue graduate study in linguistics or related fields such as French, Germanic Languages, Sociology, Library Science, and other humanities and social sciences, opening the door to advanced research and professional opportunities.
Curriculum and Courses
Miami University’s Linguistics Program offers a major and a minor to all students. The interdisciplinary program is housed in the English Department in cooperation with a number of departments that contribute to the program through their course offerings.
Linguistics is a flexible program that encourages students to pursue their particular interests across a wide range of disciplines. Faculty members from throughout the Department of English and from a variety of departments across Miami teach courses for the program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Linguistics B.A., the student will:
- Demonstrate understanding of the theories, practices, and terminology of linguistic science;
- Demonstrate the ability to analyze language from different perspectives, depending on the focus of each individual course;
- Demonstrate the ability to summarize, synthesize, and critically evaluate relevant literature in linguistics, depending on the focus of each individual course.
