Uncover the Nature of Language
Linguistics is the scientific study of language from its origins to how people use it today in various communication contexts. Linguists investigate the properties of language in all of its forms (spoken, written, signed, programmed), and describe how language is used wherever, whenever, and however it is practiced.
Curriculum and Courses
Our Linguistics Program offers a major and a minor to all Miami students. The interdisciplinary program is housed in the English Department in cooperation with a number of departments that contribute to the program through their course offerings.
Areas covered by the program include:
- American Dialects, Culture, and Identity
- Articulation and Communication Disorders
- Computational Methods, Programming, and AI
- Foreign Languages and Cultures
- Historical Linguistics
- Language Development
- Linguistic Anthropology and Ethnography
- Native North American Cultures and Languages
- Psychology of Language and Cognition
Linguistics is a flexible program that encourages students to pursue their particular interests across a wide range of disciplines. Faculty members from throughout the Department of English and from a variety of departments across Miami teach courses for the program.
At Miami, there’s something for everyone.
I like the amount of choice that I have. I’ve taken linguistics classes that are cross-listed with various other fields, and I think that provides a really great perspective. We’re essentially told to pick what specialty we want to go into, and then the major works with you to do that.
