Describe, Formulate, and Analyze Real-World Problems
The Mathematical Modeling Certificate at Miami University prepares students to analyze real-world problems using advanced mathematical techniques. The program emphasizes translating complex systems into mathematical models and builds skills relevant to careers in data science, engineering, economics, and research.
Students are introduced to key areas such as dynamical systems, partial differential equations, linear algebra, and graph theory, along with other applied and computational methods. Through hands-on applications, students learn how mathematics can model systems like fluid flow in pipes, economic behavior through the Keynesian cross model, opinion dynamics in social networks, and biological and chemical processes including protein dynamics and oscillators. Additional examples include predator-prey systems, genetic control systems, neural networks, and network flows.
Curriculum and Courses
Minimum 12 credit hours required. All courses must be taken for a grade, with a minimum 3.0 GPA for certificate completion. All four courses must be completed at Miami University.
