Investigate Social Values, Inequalities, and Change
The Social Justice minor at Miami University empowers students to critically examine systems of inequality and work toward meaningful social change at the local, national, and global levels. Students engage with perspectives from sociology, political science, education, and cultural studies to better understand the structural causes of injustice and the strategies used to promote equity and inclusion.
The Miami University social justice minor is ideal for students pursuing careers or graduate study in education, nonprofit leadership, public service, law, advocacy, healthcare, and community organizing. This minor complements a wide range of majors by strengthening critical thinking, ethical reasoning, communication, and civic engagement skills. By connecting theory with action, the social justice minor prepares Miami University students to become informed, socially responsible leaders committed to equity, justice, and positive social transformation.
Elective courses address a range of inequalities including those based on race/ethnicity, class, gender, age, sexualities and disabilities. (18-19 semester hours)
Eligibility
A minimum overall GPA of 2.5 is required for this minor. With the exception of the fieldwork, courses must be taken for a grade (not credit/no-credit). Students planning to take this minor should consult with the chief departmental adviser.
