Treat Communication Disorders
The Speech Pathology and Audiology, B.S., will prepare you for a professional graduate program in the areas of speech pathology or audiology. You will gain hands-on experience identifying communication disorders in patients of all ages and develop treatment plans.
Speech-language pathologists evaluate, treat, prevent, and research communication disorders and audiologists assess and manage disorders of hearing and balance.

Curriculum and Courses
In addition to preparing you for graduate school in speech-language pathology or audiology, the courses you choose will give you a solid foundation to become skilled, compassionate leaders and team players in other exciting careers. Previous graduates have pursued rewarding careers in nursing, politics, public health, research, and recreational therapy.
Research Opportunities
Both undergraduate and graduate students take advantage of the clinical and medical expertise of department faculty for guidance on current and potential intervention and assessment approaches in speech and hearing.
The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology offers numerous opportunities in basic and applied clinical research. Over the past three years, SPA faculty have secured more than $1.3 million in federal research funding. Research draws from physics, biology, engineering, psychology, linguistics, medicine, and philosophy.

- Dysphagia
- Neurocognitive communication
- Social communication
- Autism
- Language disorders/literacy
Every year, both Undergraduate Summer Scholar students and Dean’s Scholar students work with faculty on various projects in their labs.
Miami University Speech and Hearing Clinic
Housed within the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, the clinic serves the speech, language, and hearing needs of individuals within the university and the southwest Ohio community by enhancing the quality of their communication skills.
Clinical faculty are committed to:
- Providing cost-effective services that meet the unique needs of all individuals and their families
- Promoting excellence in clinical training of future speech-language-hearing professionals
Both undergraduate and graduate students benefit from their direct involvement with patients in the clinic.
Careers in Speech Pathology and Audiology
After completing the broad curriculum that spans topics in anatomy, acoustics, physiology, and language, as well as clinical experience, students are prepared to apply for graduate education programs in speech-language pathology or audiology
A Masters degree is required to become a licensed and certified speech pathologist. A clinical doctorate (Doctor of Audiology) is required to become a licensed and certified audiologist.
