Become a World Language Educator
Research shows there are benefits of second language learning that exceed a student’s own linguistic abilities. Second language learning provides cognitive benefits that help to support academic achievement and improve beliefs about other cultures. Miami offers five K-12 licensure programs: Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish.
Curriculum and Courses
Teacher candidates complete language and culture courses in the College of Arts and Science. For the education portion of the degree, we utilize a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy for each language taught in the department. We offer two teaching methods courses to instruct teacher candidates on effective language teaching strategies. Study abroad is also required. A few of the courses you will take in this major include:
- EDL 204 Sociocultural Studies in Education
- TCE 191 Threshold Concepts of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry
- TCE 420F Teaching Foreign Language (FL): Elementary School Practicum
- TCE 421A Classroom Cultures, Community, and Climate
- TCE 454 TESOL in PK-12: Instructional Theory and Practice
At Miami, there’s something for everyone.
