Turn Numbers Into Solutions That Matter
A B.S. in Applied Mathematics at Miami University is more than formulas—it’s a versatile degree designed to solve real-world problems in science, technology, finance, and engineering. This applied mathematics degree combines strong mathematical theory with hands-on applied mathematics courses, preparing students with in-demand skills such as critical thinking, data analysis, modeling, and problem-solving.
With a flexible math major curriculum, students can customize their coursework to support career goals or graduate school preparation. Whether you’re pursuing careers in data science, analytics, healthcare, business, or research, a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics provides a competitive edge and opens doors across high-growth industries.
Curriculum and Courses
In the Applied Mathematics B.S., students follow a flexible, career-focused math major curriculum designed to build strong analytical and computational skills. Core subjects include calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and statistics—paired with applied mathematics courses in modeling, numerical analysis, and data science.
Students can also explore electives in computer science, physics, economics, or engineering to customize their path. Whether you’re pursuing a BS in Applied Mathematics and Statistics or preparing for graduate study, this program lets you shape your education around your goals and interests.
- MTH 222 Introduction to Linear Algebra
- MTH 252 Calculus III

Advanced and Combined Options
Miami University’s Department of Mathematics offers a Master of Science (M.S.) in Mathematics with an accelerated pathway for motivated students. With careful academic planning beginning in or before the sophomore year, students can complete a bachelor’s degree in four years and earn a master’s degree in mathematics in just one additional year. While a traditional M.S. in Mathematics typically takes two years after completing a B.A. or B.S., this accelerated option allows students to finish the program in one year plus two summers, saving time while advancing academic and career goals.

Placement into math and statistics courses is based on ACT or SAT Mathematics test subscore. Students who do not have ACT or SAT scores on file with the university and who want to take a course that has a math prerequisite are required to take our online placement test.
Students who have ACT/SAT scores on file may opt to take the placement exam; however, we have found ACT/SAT scores to be a better predictor of preparation.
