Benchmarks of Performance for All Art Education Majors
Students who are accepted into the Bachelor of Science in Art Education Program will be continually assessed for continuation in the Program as indicated by specific academic performance, content standards, and professional dispositions for the Program. These benchmarks and specific indicators of competency for continuation in the program are outlined in the more specific literature of this program.
You will plan your program with an art education advisor in the Department of Art to demonstrate progress toward candidacy for licensure by successfully completing benchmarks and programmatic reviews. To become a candidate for licensure, you must successfully complete all requirements for graduation, including student teaching and the edTPA.
In addition, before receiving your teaching license from the Ohio Department of Education, you must pass two Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) exams: 006 Art Content Knowledge and 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12).
Please note that if you are planning to teach in a state other than Ohio after graduation, communicate early with your advisor. Some states require additional coursework, which can be worked into your program of studies with early planning.
Additional Opportunities
Learn from Art Education Experts on our Campus, and Beyond
The Miami University Art Education program values creating opportunities for our students to learn from the larger art education community, and supports students in presenting at and attending state and national conferences to connect with art educators from across the state and country! We also regularly host our Preservice Art Education Conference, where students connect with and learn from our growing community of art education alumni, who are doing amazing things in schools, museums, and community contexts throughout the state!
Connect and Create Change in Community
Our program emphasizes creating opportunities for emerging art educators to make change in communities beyond our classrooms! Miami Art Education students partner with community organizations, music festivals, schools, and museums to lead arts programming. Our capstone course supports junior and senior students to create their own meaningful community arts partnership!
Collaborate on Transformative Teaching with Indigenous Scholars
Our program’s most cherished ongoing partnership is with scholars and teachers from the Myaamia Center, the research arm of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, whose people were among the original stewards of this land. Miami Art Education students have the unique opportunity to collaborate with Indigenous scholars to create lessons about Myaamia arts, history, and culture and then teach them in area schools. This program has provided over 2400 unique learning experiences to SW Ohio youth!
