The East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) major provides intensive studies in the languages and cultures of East Asia, focusing on China and Japan, the world’s #2 and #3 largest economies and important U.S. trading partners. EALC prepares students for careers in government, defense, science, engineering, technology, education, and publishing.

Curriculum and Courses
This major offers a broad knowledge of East Asian cultures and languages, focusing on China and Japan, from various fields of literature, history, art, geography, and religion. Students can choose either China concentration or Japan concentration. Students are required to complete 15 credit hours of their chosen languages above 201, plus 9 selective hours (China or Japan) and 12 related hours.

An exhilarating total immersion Japanese program in Tokyo. This intensive workshop with the thrill of living and traveling in Japan gives students the opportunity to complete one full year of college Japanese at 200-level or 300-level sequences in 6 weeks.
Intensive Chinese Summer Program in Tianjin, China
The 6-week intensive Chinese summer program in Tianjin provides a great opportunity for student immersion in Chinese culture, improvement of language skills, and increased understanding of China. Also includes excursions to historical and cultural sites. Students may earn up to 9 Miami credits.
