Read and Think Critically
Explore the English Literature B.A. at Miami University, a dynamic program designed for students passionate about reading, writing, and critical thinking. As an English Literature major, you’ll engage deeply with the literary works that shape culture and human experience — from poetry and fiction to plays, films, and nonfiction. Through this Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, you’ll develop essential writing and analytical skills while exploring diverse literary traditions and cultural contexts.
Our literature major offers courses on everything from graphic novels to young adult fiction and popular literature, preparing you for careers that value communication, interpretation, and creativity.
Curriculum and Courses
This 36-credit hour major in English: Literature boasts a flexible curriculum, making it easy to major or double major. Choose from courses in fiction, poetry, drama, and film that span cultural traditions, authors, and periods, from the classic to the cutting-edge, including many small, seminar-style special topics courses. Nationally recognized faculty provide individualized feedback on your writing and creative work.

I have had wonderful experiences with the English literature professors here at Miami, especially Dr. Katie Johnson and Dr. Michele Navakas. Both of these professors, in introduction to Literary Culture and Theory and Literature & the Environment respectively, provided a foundation for literary theory that I have found to be applicable even to my premed coursework, and introduced me to formative texts that I still think about to this day.

Research
Considering a career in research and scholarship? English students routinely complete advanced critical and creative research projects, with many earning Undergraduate Summer Scholarships, Dean Scholarships, Departmental Honors, and Geoffrion Scholarships through Miami University’s Humanities Center.
Study Abroad
The Department of English offers a distinctive London summer school study-abroad program and collaborates on January Term (J-Term) programs in Florence and Paris, providing students with international academic and cultural experiences across Europe.e

These opportunities recognize student achievement in literature, linguistics, creative writing, and professional writing, as well as accomplishments at specific academic stages and in specialized areas of study.
It’s been helpful that in the majority of my English classes, we have active discussions based on reading a text, and I think that aspect is most similar to real life: synthesizing what you know, learning about the world, and bringing it together with other people. You learn how to be open-minded to their ideas and how to think and articulate on the fly.
