Understand Aging and Its Effects
Open to all majors, the 21-22 hour Gerontology Minor provides a multidisciplinary understanding of aging as it affects the individual and our society.
As the number and percentage of older persons in our society have grown, this is an area of increasing focus. Miami’s gerontology program is particularly strong because of its association with the nationally known Scripps Gerontology Center.
Students select from two concentration areas or tracks. The Health and Aging Practice, Policy, and Administration track is designed to introduce future professionals in fields such as medicine, nursing, public health, public administration, rehabilitation, and social work to current issues, policies, and programs affecting the health and well-being of older adults. The Leadership and Innovation in an Aging Society track is designed to prepare students from an array of majors to work and thrive in an aging society.
Eligibility
A minimum 2.0 GPA is required for all courses in this minor. Gerontology courses must be taken for a grade (not credit/no-credit). Students planning to take this minor should consult with the chief departmental advisor.
