Study the Past to Prepare for the Future
Our History B.A. develops the skills necessary for leadership in a wide range of careers by immersing students in the study of the past. As a history major, you’ll engage with complex historical narratives and gain essential skills in critical thinking, analytical writing, and research.
Through diverse history courses, students reconstruct, analyze, and interpret the human past in all its richness and complexity—building the insight needed to understand the present and prepare for the future. The history department provides a strong academic foundation for success in fields such as education, law, public service, and more.

Curriculum and Courses
The B.A. in History provides a flexible yet comprehensive academic foundation. In addition to the core Introduction to Historical Inquiry course, students complete requirements in American history, Western or European civilization, world history, and a senior history capstone.
You’ll explore diverse history courses that develop skills in historical analysis, critical thinking, and research. Elective options allow you to tailor your history major with subjects ranging from political, cultural, and global perspectives. Department offerings include engaging topics such as “The Mongols and Their World” and “Recent American History.”
This well-rounded curriculum prepares students for careers in education, public service, or advanced study in archival research, museum studies, and other liberal arts education pathways.

Careers in History
The skills you acquire through the History major—critical thinking, creative thinking, and good writing—are ones that transfer to a number of professions.
In recent years, Miami history graduates have discovered careers in:
- Law Enforcement: the FBI, US Customs and Border Protection, and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF)
- Business: consulting, sales, advertising, and marketing
- Education: teaching, museum work, and public history
- Government
- non-profit organizations: Peace Corps, Americorps, Teach for America, and USPIRG
- writing, editing, reporting, and blogging

- Undergraduate Research: Numerous research opportunities await students who receive Undergraduate Summer Scholarships and Dean’s Scholarships. It is also possible to obtain an internship at a museum or other historical site.
- Education Abroad: Majors are encouraged to embark on education abroad in order to fulfill the Global Miami Plan. There are many study abroad options available to History majors, including summer and winter-term workshops, semester programs, year-long programs, and the MUDEC (Luxembourg) campus.
