Work with Emergent and Striving Readers
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Literacy and Language program at Miami University prepares students to become literacy leaders and reading specialists in K-12 schools. Through advanced coursework and a supervised practicum, students engage with current research to support all learners. The program explores the cultural, linguistic, and other diverse identity and environmental factors that influence literacy development. Faculty guide students in considering how this can shape assessment and instructional design in their classrooms.
Curriculum and Courses
All of our program courses are taught by faculty who are experts in the field of literacy. The curriculum consists of the online core courses listed below and electives which may include online, hybrid, or on-campus courses.
Our faculty collectively have decades of classroom teaching experience, contribute to current scholarly conversations, and recognize that you also contribute expertise to our class conversations. Our courses feature a collaborative learning environment where everyone shares and grows in their knowledge and professional practice.
In addition, Reading Endorsement Certificate courses are embedded within the degree program, which allows you to complete the degree and certificate simultaneously.

Flexible Learning
With 15 credit hours of elective coursework, you can tailor the program to your interests with interdisciplinary courses in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), educational psychology, curriculum design, and more.
Upon completing the program, you earn a Master of Education in Literacy and Language degree. Reading Endorsement Certificate courses are embedded within the degree program, enabling you to complete the degree and certificate simultaneously. You may also add a TESOL or Teaching of Writing Certificate, depending on your elective choices.
Our curriculum emphasizes the value of literacy instruction while addressing the needs of diverse learners, from early readers to multilingual learners. Explore how culture and social factors influence language development and examine current issues like the science of reading.

Our degree includes all courses required for a Reading Endorsement Certificate, equipping you with the credentials to support emergent, struggling, and striving readers. Aligned with the International Literacy Association’s (ILA) 2017 Revised Standards, the M.Ed. in Literacy and Language program prepares you to:
- Use a scholarly voice to communicate literacy practices in a professional and effective manner that advocates for the professional growth of self and others.
- Identify and explain various literacy roles using personal experience and relevant research.
- Integrate theory and practice into high-quality literacy instruction by providing concrete examples that support practices.
- Communicate with others using convincing reasoning, concrete examples, and connections to relevant research in order to participate in and lead others to focus on culturally relevant pedagogy.
- Use literacy assessments to support instructional decisions based on current literacy research.

Application Requirements
Apply to Miami’s M.Ed. in Literacy and Language degree program by submitting the following application materials:
- Names, titles, and email addresses of two references willing to submit letters on behalf of your candidacy.
- Graduate School application with fee.
- Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
- A personal statement describing your interest in the program, including how multiliteracies and culturally responsive approaches to literacy and language can support your professional work.
- Résumé/CV.
Scholarships and Tuition
- Graduate Assistantships (GA): GA positions are available through nomination by the Department of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry. All assistantships are subject to the approval of the Graduate School.
- Teacher Education Access at Miami (TEAM) Scholarship: The TEAM Scholarship provides a discount on graduate tuition and fees for Ohio Pre-K-12 Educators.
