Reading Instruction for Young Learners
Our Reading Endorsement Graduate Certificate program will prepare you to support the teaching of reading to young learners through 12th grade.
The program draws from the latest research and field expertise for working with emergent and striving readers.
You will gain insights into sociopolitical, cultural, and linguistic factors that affect literacy and research practices that inform assessment and instructional design.
Program Overview
Ohio P-12 educators seeking an endorsement and community educators seeking a stand-alone certificate are welcome to pursue our program that supports literacy among young people. The program draws from the latest research and field expertise for working with emergent and striving readers. You will gain insights into sociopolitical, cultural, and linguistic factors that affect literacy and research practices that inform assessment and instructional design.
All students receive a graduate-level Reading Endorsement Certificate from Miami University. Licensed Ohio educators may attach a reading endorsement to their licenses and teach reading in grades P-12.
Reading Endorsement Certificate Curriculum and Courses
This 5-course, 16-credit-hour endorsement certificate enables a teacher to teach reading in grades P-12 in the State of Ohio. Upon passing the tests, you will also need to complete the application to add the Reading endorsement as a second teaching field. The application is on the Ohio Assessments for Educators website.

Admissions Requirements
Our Reading Endorsement Certificate program is available to current and prospective graduate degree program students. Prospective students who are not seeking a Miami degree may also apply.
Please review the application process carefully, as it differs by student status.
Current Miami Students
Current Miami graduate students should submit the current Miami graduate student certificate application form. Miami students may apply for admission in the fall and spring semesters.
New Miami Students
New Miami students will submit the new Miami graduate student certificate application. This application is used if you are only seeking admission to the graduate certificate. Be sure to select “Graduate Certificate” on page 1 of the application. Required supplemental materials include transcripts and a personal statement detailing your interest in the program. The application fee is $20.
(Current MU degree students wanting to add a certificate should not use this application.)
