Ohio Principal License
The Principal Licensure Graduate Certificate Program is tailored to students who currently hold an appropriate Master’s Degree in Education (as determined by the Program Coordinator), and wish to obtain principal licensure. The program seeks to develop and empower democratic educational leaders to mobilize knowledge for the leadership of schools in more just, ethical, and innovative directions. Coursework is delivered 100% online utilizing both synchronous and asynchronous modalities to accommodate busy professional educators seeking to obtain principal licensure. Our coursework challenges students to ask complex questions about ethical, democratic leadership in the multi-dimensional context of contemporary schooling and embodies a sense of hope and possibility for the future of schools.
Curriculum and Courses
Our Principal Licensure Graduate Certificate program contains the requisite curricular requirements for candidates seeking principal licensure from the Ohio Department of Education. It also provides students with a credential awarded by the university. The program consists of eight courses equaling 20-22 credit hours. Course credit may be considered pending an applicant’s graduate transcript review.
The program’s structure allows educators to complete their Ohio State Board of Education’s curricular requirements in under two years of part-time enrollment while working full-time. Courses are fully online, making the program accessible for candidates across the entire state. The program includes two internship courses that provide students with leadership opportunities under the direction of licensed administrators in their school/school district. Each student identifies a school principal mentor to observe and test the application of theory to a field site. The internship provides professional networks and leadership mentors.
Miami University’s Principal Licensure Graduate Certificate program is accredited by CAEP and the Ohio Higher Learning Commission, with its curriculum based on the Ohio Principal Standards. Candidates for licensure must pass the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) 015 Educational Leadership licensure exam.
The following is a sample of program courses:
- EDL 601 Educational Leadership Theory
- EDL 645 Supervision of Teaching
- EDL 710 Internship in Educational Leadership
