Connect Theory to Practice
The School Leadership, M.Ed. program is designed for educators who wish to become school principals or administrators. It seeks to develop and empower student-centered leaders to mobilize knowledge for school leadership in more just, democratic, and ethical directions.
The 30-credit-hour online program allows teachers to complete their master’s degree in two years of part-time enrollment while working full-time. The program includes an optional principal licensure track for candidates wanting to also add an Ohio administrator’s principal license credential to their current educator’s license. The Principal Licensure track requires 33 credits.
School Leadership Curriculum and Courses
The School Leadership, M.Ed., coursework challenges students to ask complex questions about the leadership context of schools and embodies a sense of hope and possibility for the future of schools. Our students include teacher-leaders who aspire to lead from the classroom, as well as those who aspire to the principalship, and other district leadership roles, including curriculum and student services.
The curriculum is based on the Ohio Principal Standards and the National Educational Leadership Preparation standards. Most SLP courses are taught by full-time Miami faculty; some are taught by current school leaders. The program is offered as a part-time pursuit and is fully online. Much of the coursework is connected to the students’ leadership work in their schools, which their school principal or district administrator guides.
A distinctive feature of the School Leadership program is the cohort system. Students are accepted in cohorts, reflecting the department’s vision of educational leadership as a collaborative process. Under the cohort system, a selected group of individuals who aspire to build leadership roles progress together through a designed program, creating networks and mutually supportive practices as they advance through their coursework.
