Discover the World with Russian
Cybersecurity, US-Russia tension, cryptocurrency, hackers, oil prices, and expanding business in the former USSR… all mean studying Russian is a good way to make yourself more employable. A major in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies lets you study Russian alongside the politics, history, literature, and anthropology of countries stretching from Europe to the Pacific.
Curriculum and Courses
Majors receive individual attention from professors, beginning their first year at Miami. You can also work with professors on research projects and independent students. Language classes have free conversation practices with native speakers alongside regular class sessions. Beyond Russian language, we also offer courses in Soviet politics, Russian history, literature, folklore, etc. Our majors are encouraged to study overseas and often receive national-level scholarships as well as scholarships within Miami. Majors form a tight community of scholars and friends on campus; the major is designed to work well with a second major such as International Studies or History.

Additional Opportunities
Students take advantage of scholarships, guest lecturers from the US and abroad (including Nobel Prize winners), and programs associated with the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. Miami is the only U.S. university to have such a center while focusing on undergraduate education. Students may also be interested in becoming a Dawisha Junior Fellow, a competitive program open to those majoring (or double-majoring) in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Students study abroad in Central Asia and the European Union countries of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. For those studying with Miami’s co-sponsored program in Kyrgyzstan, financial aid transfers automatically to that program.
