Study Spanish for a Better World!
Our Spanish, B.A., program will help you form strong oral and written communication skills in both Spanish and Portuguese, and it will develop your capacity for critical thinking and cultural literacy.
Our department offers a rich undergraduate program that allows for the study of the literature, language, and cultures of the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds from a broad range of perspectives: film studies, gender studies, creative writing, history, and more.
Curriculum and Courses
Among the requirements for the Spanish major are courses in Latin American and Peninsular Spanish cultural studies, linguistics, and Spanish for medical, business, and community work. These classes provide the broadest possible exposure to the many aspects of Hispanic language, history, and culture as well as opportunities to use Spanish in professional settings as a means to optimize students’ career possibilities after graduation.

Earn Your Master’s Alongside Your Bachelor’s
Miami University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a combined Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with an accelerated pathway for motivated students. With careful academic planning beginning in or before the sophomore year, students can complete a bachelor’s degree in four years and earn a master’s degree in Spanish, condensing what would normally be five or six years of study into four or five years. This program is designed especially for outstanding students who wish to take advantage of the opportunity to begin their graduate career early.
I will be applying to medical school this coming May. I am excited to explain why I loved taking Spanish during my undergraduate career and how it led me to my passion about cultural competency, as well as…shadowing doctors in Spain and working as a bilingual medical scribe. It is also important to be able to expand on any diversity and inclusion questions that interviewers are very likely to ask you during medical school interviews. I believe I learned most about intercultural perspectives and cultural competency in this course.

Study Abroad
The Department offers an array of study abroad programs in Spanish-speaking countries. Workshops and Education Abroad programs in Winter and Summer Terms are run by Miami faculty in Spain and Latin America.
Sigma Delta Pi (Hispanic Honor Society)
Welcome to the Miami University Alpha Alpha chapter of Sigma Delta Pi. Our organization was founded at the University of California, Berkeley in 1919 and has over 555 chapters across the nation.
SPOT Tutoring Center
SPOT (Spanish and Portuguese Open Tutoring) is a free student service offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese which strives to enhance students’ performance and proficiency with the language.
To have interned in a Spanish-speaking environment has really boosted both my Spanish and professional skills. I feel so much more comfortable talking with native speakers, and in the process I got to help the local Hispanic community in Cincinnati. In addition, it was a great experience to share in an interview or resume. I think it was critical to be able to have practice with the Spanish language and Hispanic culture outside the classroom, and I’m so thankful to have been given that opportunity!
