Explore Connections of Art

The Art Therapy Minor builds on the foundation of three lateral human-centered perspectives significant to the field: art studio, art education, and psychology. You will explore connections between art production, methods of facilitating art experiences with people across the lifespan, and an understanding of human behaviors.

Eligibility

A minimum 2.50 GPA is required for admittance to the minor and for all courses in this minor. Courses must be taken for a grade (not credit/no-credit).

Art Therapy Curriculum and Courses

The Introduction to Art Therapy course will tie the courses together through presenting exploratory art-making activities, foundational readings, and possible pathways to a career in the profession. The minor encourages breadth of exploration and offers separate tracks for Art majors, Psychology majors, and majors other than Art or Psychology. (18-19 semester hours) Below are a few courses that fulfill the Art Therapy Minor:

Career Options in Art Therapy

These skills are applicable to any setting that employs helping professions, including hospitals, schools, correctional facilities, domestic violence shelters, geriatric facilities, psychiatric facilities, residential facilities, day programs for developmental disabilities and chronic mental illness, etc. Students who pursue and complete a master’s degree in art therapy will be eligible for mental health licensure in their state, which grants the ability then to have four broad career opportunities (Art Therapist, Art Educator*, Counselor, and Artist).

If it wasn’t for this Art Therapy minor, I would never have been able to see my potential in being creative. I have been grown and stretched in this minor. I would not categorize myself into the artistic category before I started this minor, but through many trials and tribulations, I can say that I have found a sense of creativity within me from the studio classes I needed to take. This minor has grown and stretched me in so many ways that I am truly grateful for!
