The Creative Writing minor at Miami University offers students an engaging, hands-on writing experience paired with critical thinking skills developed through the close reading and interpretation of literary texts. You’ll strengthen your ability to express ideas clearly and creatively, learn to analyze complex stories and perspectives, and grow as a flexible, inventive writer. Designed for students in any major, this creative writing program in Oxford, Ohio helps you build communication skills that stand out—whether you’re preparing for graduate school, creative careers, or any field that values original thinking and strong writing.

Eligibility

There are no special eligibility requirements for this minor. The minor is open to all majors except English: Creative Writing.

Courses and Curriculum

The Creative Writing minor curriculum introduces students to a range of writing genres, techniques, and workshops designed to develop both craft and voice. Through hands-on courses at Miami University, you’ll practice creative writing, receive feedback from peers and faculty, and build skills that support academic, professional, and creative goals.

After completing the required course, ENG 226 Introduction to Creative Writing: Short Fiction and Poetry, the remaining hours can be chosen from writing and English electives. A sample of courses is listed below:
