The Chinese Minor at Miami University equips students with essential language skills and cultural knowledge to engage confidently with one of the world’s most influential nations. Through immersive study in Mandarin Chinese, literature, and culture, students explore both traditional values and modern social dynamics, gaining insight into a civilization known for its rich history, global economic impact, and growing international influence.
With up to three years of language training (18 credit hours), students develop the ability to communicate effectively in real-world situations while building a strong foundation for careers in international business, global studies, education, government, and cross-cultural communication. Whether you’re interested in China’s booming economy, complex cultural heritage, or role on the world stage, this minor opens doors to meaningful global opportunities.
Eligibility
Chinese language and culture and literature credits transferred to Miami from other institutions may be used to fulfill the requirements. A minimum 2.0 GPA is required for all courses in this minor. Courses must be taken for a grade (not credit/no-credit). Students planning to take this minor should consult with the lead departmental advisor.
Courses and Curriculum
The Chinese minor requires 18 hours, 12 or more must be Chinese language courses. The remaining hours are to be selected from Chinese culture courses.
