Delve Into the Origin of Language

The Linguistics minor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio explores the origin and nature of language, examining how language works across spoken, written, and signed forms. In this linguistics program, you’ll study how people use language across cultures, communities, and technologies—building strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that apply to careers in education, technology, research, healthcare, and beyond.

The linguistics minor curriculum introduces students to a wide range of subfields, including applied and educational linguistics, formal and computational linguistics, historical and comparative linguistics, neuro- and psycholinguistics, and sociocultural linguistics. Through engaging courses at Miami University, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how language shapes identity, learning, and human interaction.

This minor requires 18 semester hours.

Eligibility

A minimum 2.0 GPA is required for all courses in this minor. Courses must be taken for a grade (not credit/no-credit).

Courses and Curriculum

The Linguistics minor consists of 18 hours of study (six courses) from the introductory to the senior level, including historical surveys, major author courses, and courses in special topics. Students planning to take the Linguistics minor should consult with the Linguistics Director.
