Explore the Planet. Protect Its Future.
If you’re interested in biological sciences, earth science, physical sciences, or environmental engineering, Miami University’s Environmental Science co-major is a strong complement to your primary major.
This interdisciplinary program helps you understand how natural systems function and how science can be applied to solve real-world environmental challenges.
The Environmental Science co-major emphasizes:
- Earth science and geoscience principles
- Life science approaches to environmental systems
- Environmental processes and ecosystem dynamics
- Human impacts on natural resources
- Scientific problem-solving for environmental challenges
Curriculum and Courses
A required introductory environmental science core course (IES 275), usually taken in the sophomore year, is typically team-taught by a biological scientist and an earth scientist and emphasizes the mix of scientific approaches to understanding environmental issues. Students take an advanced environmental science course (IES 431) as a synthesis experience, and for the practicum requirement take a field course, study abroad, or mentored independent study. Other courses in the social and natural sciences are used to complete the requirements of the co-major.
At Miami, there is something for everyone.
