Teach Analytical Skills
The Integrated Mathematics Education (Grades 7-12), B.S., major allows you to change lives in school classrooms and communities by combining your interests in mathematics, data analysis, and problem-solving to develop people skills and technical know-how. Our students gain a deeper appreciation of mathematics and statistics as tools for communication and sense-making, and learn techniques to foster collaboration with young learners.
Good math teachers add so much to students’ lives as they cross the great divide from adolescence to young adulthood. Sometimes the biggest takeaway is not the lesson taught, but the concept learned. Miami University’s Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry department prepares future teachers who have a developing passion for the skill and art of teaching, a commitment to educational equity, and a heart for students.
Integrated Math Education Curriculum and Courses
Our students benefit from a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy, complemented by intensive preparation in mathematics content. We also provide courses that teach you how to teach students with special needs.
This major prepares you to teach any course offered in the mathematics department of a middle school or high school. Students who elect to double major in math might also pursue STEM careers outside the classroom. Additionally, students who obtain additional education may choose to pursue roles in educational administration. A few of the courses you will take in this major include:
- TCE 191 Threshold Concepts of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry
- MTH 408 Mathematical Problem Solving with Technology
- MTH 409 Secondary Mathematics from an Advanced Perspective
- TCE 429A Adolescent Mathematics
- EDP 256 Psychology of the Exceptional Learner
Accreditation
Miami’s Department of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. While Miami participates in licensure of teachers through an interstate agreement, if you are planning to teach in another state, you should contact that state’s certification office so you can apply for certification or licensure in that state.

He is also a big fan of writing, which he uses to teaches the historical and cultural sides of math.
