Connect Theory to Practice
The School Leadership, M.Ed. program at Miami University is designed for educators who wish to mobilize knowledge as principals, directors, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and other executives in the service of students and school communities. We seek to develop and build the capacity of student-centered leaders to move PreK-12 schools in more democratic, innovative, and ethical directions.
This 30-credit-hour online program typically meets weekly after traditional school hours, allowing educators from across Ohio to complete their master’s degree in two years of part-time enrollment while working full-time. For an additional three credit hours (for a total of 33 credit hours), students may add Ohio Principal Licensure.
Funding, including the TEAM scholarship, may be available to help defray tuition costs.
School Leadership Curriculum and Courses
The curriculum is based on the Ohio Principal Standards and the National Educational Leadership Preparation standards. Student learning is applied and extended through internship coursework (6 credit hours) with a mentor who can help to guide the observation and practice of authentic leadership experiences in dynamic school community settings.
In all coursework, Department of Educational Leadership faculty strive to create engaging and relevant learning opportunities that allow students to make connections and think deeply about authentic problems of leadership practice in PreK-12 schools. Coursework includes:

Empowering Leaders to Transform Education
The School Leadership, M.Ed., coursework challenges students to ask complex questions about the leadership context of schools and embodies a sense of hope and possibility for the future of schools. Our students include teacher-leaders who aspire to lead from the classroom, as well as those who aspire to the principalship, and other district leadership/director roles in areas including curriculum, operations/business, and student services. Coursework is grounded in the Ohio Standards for Principals (2018), which will facilitate student success on the required licensing exam for the Ohio School Principal License.
Additional Opportunities
Principal Licensure
To obtain Principal Licensure in Ohio, students must also meet requirements set forth in state law and regulation, which currently include:
- Pass the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) 015 Educational Leadership licensure exam, prescribed by the State Board of Education.
- Have two years of successful teaching experience under a standard or professional teaching license (or work experience under a professional pupil services license) for the ages and grade levels for which the principal license is sought.
Ohio Licensure requirements are subject to change pursuant to state law and regulation.
Internship
As part of the M.Ed. in School Leadership (with Principal Licensure), students engage in two internship courses: Internship in Educational Leadership I & II for three credit hours each. While maintaining their full-time employment, students will work closely with one of their building leaders (or other approved leader) who will serve as a mentor to guide the observation and practice of authentic leadership experiences in dynamic school community settings.
Application Information
Applications are accepted for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Candidates apply to Miami University’s graduate school via its online application and upload the required application materials:
- Transcripts from all collegiate coursework.
- An undergraduate degree is required with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
- Valid Ohio educator license.
- Personal statement.
- Two letters of recommendation
- One letter of recommendation must be from the student’s superintendent, principal, or direct supervisor and indicate their support and willingness to work with the student during internship coursework.
