Lead the Future of Aging in Gerontology – Ph.D.
The Social Gerontology, Ph.D. program encourages you to integrate knowledge and research methods from a range of behavioral and social sciences in your study of social gerontology.
Our program–the first in the state of Ohio, and among the first in the nation–builds scholars and educators who can meet the challenges, demands, and opportunities presented by global aging.
As a graduate of the doctoral program, you will be prepared to teach and conduct research in institutions of higher education, and hold positions in policy or service organizations.

The courses you choose will open up a wealth of career opportunities — not lock you into one occupation. You’ll extend your education way beyond the classroom to every area of your life.

Ph.D. Students
Application Requirements
Applicants to the doctoral program generally have a bachelor’s degree and have earned or are in the process of completing a master’s degree. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree may apply to the Ph.D. program, but if accepted, are required to begin their studies by fulfilling the core requirements for the Master of Gerontological Studies (MGS) program (37 semester hours). Admission of individuals with only a bachelor’s degree into the Ph.D. program is highly competitive and relatively unusual.
Students are accepted into the doctoral program from a range of disciplines. For students who enter with a master’s degree from a discipline other than gerontology, the faculty will determine which master’s-level core courses must be taken as part of their doctoral studies.
Application Deadline is Dec. 1
- Transcripts from your previous university courses
- A statement of purpose
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- If applicable, English proficiency test scores
- GRE is NOT required
