Earn Your Graduate Special Education Credential Swiftly and Online with Miami University
Our Special Education, M.Ed., graduate program is offered fully online and is well-suited for students wanting to develop expertise in designing and implementing special education services for students.
This special education master’s degree program is accredited with available options that meet application eligibility for the Ohio K-12 Mild-Moderate Intervention Specialist (IS) teaching license.

Curriculum and Courses
Coursework is primarily online and asynchronous, utilizing an online course management system and audio/video conferencing. Courses also include three live course meetings per semester. These synchronous sessions are always on Saturdays, generally occur once a month, and typically take place between the hours of 9 a.m.-12 p.m. They provide students the space and time to meet and discuss their courses and projects, as well as receive support and interact with advisors, faculty, and peers. The web-based coursework varies and may include asynchronous project-based activities and discussions as well as sessions that may occur via Zoom. Meaningful and enriching field experiences are also incorporated into the program.

Miami University’s Graduate Special Education Program offers the online coursework needed to earn intervention specialist licensure in as few as 10 months and a master’s degree in 15 months. The four program pathways are:
- M.Ed. plus Initial Teaching Licensure (48 credit hours)
- M.Ed. plus Special Education Licensure (36 credit hours)
- M.Ed. without Licensure (30 credit hours)
- Ohio Special Education License Only (24 credit hours)

Intervention Specialist Licensure
For candidates holding teaching credentials in any other discipline who only wish to add an intervention specialist license, a non-degree pathway for intervention specialist licensure coursework may include 8 courses (24 credit hours) and can be completed within a year.

Admission Requirements
Admission to the degree is offered in the fall semester and requires the online degree application. Prospective students with valid Ohio educator licenses who do not seek the master’s degree and instead wish to only pursue the intervention specialist licensure may apply to Miami University using the graduate non-degree application.
In addition to the application fees, the other required items for program admission include:
- College transcripts
- Personal statement describing reasons for pursuing a career in special education and one’s ability to complete online coursework
- Resume/Curriculum Vitae
- One professional letter of recommendation addressing one’s potential for advanced graduate study
