Teach Future Leaders
The Primary Education (Pre K-5), B.S., major is designed to produce passionate teachers who can deliver high-quality, developmentally appropriate instruction to help children achieve life-long academic and social success.
Our Primary Education program gives you more classroom experiences than most universities.
We utilize a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy courses.
Curriculum and Courses
The courses required for this program will prepare you to earn your teaching license and immediately enter the field of education. You’ll extend your learning way beyond the classroom to every area of your life. Students participate actively in a variety of classrooms and communities, culminating in a 15-week, full-time student teaching experience in which they work closely with mentor teachers. A few of the courses you will take in this major include:

Urban Cohort
The Urban Cohort is a community-based approach to teacher education. Miami faculty and Urban Cohort students collaborate with high-need schools and community-based organizations to prepare teachers who are grounded in the life of the community.

Student Teach Abroad
Miami has one of the few teacher education programs in the nation that offers an international student teaching alternative for students in teacher licensure programs, allowing teacher licensure students to gain a global perspective.

Teacher Job Fair
Miami’s annual teaching-specific job fair connects our undergraduate and alumni teacher candidates with school districts from across the country.

Minors
A minor is a specific program (minimum of 18 hours) taken outside of your major to complement your skills and increase your career opportunities. A few that are commonly combined with an education degree:
Certificates
Certificates are typically fewer hours than a minor, but will be designated on your transcript. They are a series of related courses showing you have specialized knowledge in that topic.
Endorsements
These are add-ons to a valid Ohio Teaching License. In addition to coursework, passing scores on Praxis and/or Ohio Assessment Exams may also be required. See your advisor for more details.

Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Program
Qualified students can simultaneously pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree through a 4 + 1 program for teacher education majors.
