Explore Diverse Fields of Natural Science
The Zoology major (B.A. and B.S.) at Miami University allows you to tailor your degree to your specific interests within animal biology and the biological sciences. Students can focus their studies in areas such as health sciences, cell and molecular biology, ecology, environmental studies, evolution, and systematics. This flexible program provides a strong foundation in organismal biology while allowing specialization that supports careers in medicine, veterinary science, wildlife biology, environmental science, research, and conservation.
Faculty mentors guide students toward meaningful undergraduate research opportunities in state-of-the-art laboratories and field settings, helping them gain hands-on experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. Students are encouraged to present and publish their research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and to complete professional internships that provide real-world experience and career preparation in healthcare, environmental agencies, research institutions, and nonprofit organizations.
Curriculum and Courses
It is important that you obtain a solid foundation, not only in the basic core of zoology courses, but also in basic chemistry, physics, and mathematics in your study of zoology. This foundation will enable you to pursue a range of different career opportunities later.
You can pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Zoology. The requirements for these two degrees are generally similar, but a B.S. may require more coursework in the physical sciences and the selection of a specialization.
