Uncover the Foundations of Life
The Biochemistry B.A. and B.S. degree programs at Miami University explore life at the molecular level, combining principles of biology and chemistry to understand how living organisms function. Biochemists use chemical and biological methods to build molecular models of life processes in organisms ranging from microbes to humans.
In this program, students study topics such as biotechnology, genetic engineering, and biomedical engineering, gaining the scientific knowledge and laboratory skills needed for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and scientific research.
The Biochemistry program is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), ensuring a high-quality curriculum that meets national standards for biochemistry education.
Curriculum and Courses
Our Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in chemistry and biochemistry, with the flexibility to pursue other interests including other majors, study abroad, or extensive work or volunteer activities. This degree can be taken in a teaching certification track, which requires additional related credit hours taken from the College of Education, Health, and Society and results in teaching certification.
The Bioengineering focus is for the student looking for a career in areas such as design, sales, training and technology for biomaterials and biochemistry start-ups.
Our Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry was created in accordance with American Chemical Society guidelines and is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This program is designed for students who wish to become professional scientists with a strong foundation in biochemistry or who want to enter the chemical industry or graduate school in chemistry, biochemistry, or related areas.
The Biochemistry, B.S. includes the following concentrations: Pre-health Sciences concentration and Biotechnology & Computational Modeling Concentration.
Biochemistry, B.A./B.S. Learning Outcomes
- Describe, synthesize, and critique the methodological approaches presented in primary references (peer-reviewed journal articles in chemistry/biochemistry) and/or generated in student-led research
- Explain and synthesize chemistry concepts presented in laboratory research scenarios
- Write well-organized, clear, logical, grammatically correct literature critiques and laboratory reports
Additional Opportunities

Undergraduate Research
One of the core values of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is that undergraduate involvement in our research program is among the most important opportunities we can offer our students. Research labs present great opportunities to learn chemistry. You will be able to see how chemistry is used to solve problems and learn to draw from your fundamental knowledge of chemistry. You will be surprised how much you remember once you have a real situation to apply it to. All of our undergraduates are encouraged to seek out research opportunities.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Alumni Mentorship Program
Students will be paired with an alumnus working professionally in the field and who has interests and experiences that overlap with the student’s goals. The pair will interact regularly to build relationships and facilitate the student’s next steps after graduation.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Internship Program
In collaboration with our Alumni Board and the Center for Career Exploration and Success, the CHM Department is committed to connecting undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry majors with meaningful internship opportunities to apply their learning gains and advance their career aspirations. We work with the handshake platform to match students with internship programs.
