Language. Culture. Career Advantage.
The Japanese Minor at Miami University offers a comprehensive foundation in language proficiency and cultural literacy, combining systematic training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing with deep exploration of Japanese literature, history, and society.
Students gain critical insight into one of the world’s most technologically advanced and culturally rich nations, preparing for careers in global business, international relations, education, media, and STEM fields. Through coursework focused on Japan’s classical traditions and contemporary innovations, students build skills applicable to fields as diverse as robotics, design, diplomacy, and cultural studies.
The 18-credit minor allows flexibility: Japanese language and culture courses—including those transferred from other accredited institutions—may be used to fulfill requirements. Pairing this minor with majors such as International Studies, Engineering, Political Science, or Marketing can enhance both academic depth and career opportunities in East Asia and beyond.
ELIGIBILITY
A minimum 2.0 GPA is required for all courses in this minor. Courses must be taken for a grade (not credit/no-credit). Students planning to take this minor should consult with the chief program adviser.
