Explore the Role of Gender in Society
The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS) co-major at Miami University is an interdisciplinary field of study that explores how gender intersects with race, class, age, sexuality, religion, (dis)ability, gender identity, and nationality. This Women’s Studies and Gender Studies program emphasizes understanding gender within broader social and political systems of power, culture, labor, identity, and lived experience.
At Miami University, students in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies join an active and supportive learning community with close faculty mentorship, leadership opportunities, and the freedom to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. The flexibility of the major allows you to design a course of study that reflects your interests while preparing you for graduate or professional school and careers in research, writing, nonprofit and advocacy work, public policy, social services, business, law, education, communications, and related fields.
Curriculum and Courses
Courses in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are grounded in contemporary feminist research and theory and take an intersectional approach to women, gender, and sexuality as subjects of inquiry. Students examine how theory and practice connect while choosing courses from across departments, disciplines, and perspectives—creating a flexible and personalized academic experience.
The co-major is approximately 27 credit hours.
Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is a co-major, a primary major is required.
