Precision Thinking, Endless Discovery.
A mathematics degree from Miami University equips students with strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills that are in high demand across a wide range of careers. Graduates are prepared to succeed in fields such as data analysis, finance, technology, education, and research.
Miami University offers both a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Mathematics, allowing students to choose the path that best fits their goals.
The B.S. in Mathematics provides a rigorous, in-depth study of key areas such as calculus, algebra, and applied mathematics. This degree is ideal for students interested in highly analytical careers in industry, government, or pursuing graduate studies in mathematics or related fields.
The B.A. in Mathematics is designed for students who want to combine mathematics with a broader liberal arts education. With a more flexible curriculum and less intensive math requirements, it’s a great option for students interested in applying mathematical thinking across disciplines.
Curriculum and Courses
In both programs, students will develop complex problem-solving skills, the ability to think abstractly, as well as communicate mathematics. The training students receive will prepare them for a wealth of career opportunities.
A B.A. in Mathematics requires all sections of the College of Arts and Science requirements (CAS) and provides a broader range of studies across a variety of disciplines.
A B.S. in Mathematics requires only the language section of the College of Arts and Science requirements (CAS) and provides a broader range of mathematical topics.
Advanced and Combined Options
Miami University’s Department of Mathematics offers a Master of Science (M.S.) in Mathematics with an accelerated pathway for motivated students. With careful academic planning beginning in or before the sophomore year, students can complete a bachelor’s degree in four years and earn a master’s degree in mathematics in just one additional year. While a traditional M.S. in Mathematics typically takes two years after completing a B.A. or B.S., this accelerated option allows students to finish the program in one year plus two summers, saving time while advancing academic and career goals.
